Song & Dance

Song and Dance training is available to students who have passed Grade 1 standard in one dance subject area: Ballet, Tap or Modern. This prerequisite skill level is needed because it ensures pupils' basic movement ability as a foundation for further development within this subject.

Pupils are trained in the basic fundamentals of singing: pitch, rhythm, breath control, expression and projection. The curriculum is based on a wide range of songs from the Musical Theatre genre.

Pupils are taught choreographed dance sequences to accompany each song. The style of dance used: Ballet, Tap or Modern is chosen to complement the style of each specific song. Pupils are encouraged to develop a wide range of stylistic movement interpretations in order to portray effectively different characters and roles.

Assessment of pupils' progress is facilitated through the Song and Dance Medal Award examinations of the United Teachers of Dance Organisation.

As an entertainment based subject, Song and Dance is important in helping to develop pupils' personal and performance confidence.
